Method for splicing composite drop fiber optic cables

Composite drop fiber optic cables, such as Figure 8 aerial cables, are spliced using either fusion or mechanical splicing after careful preparation of the fiber subunit and messenger subunit to ensure low-loss, permanent connections.Preparation and SafetyBefore splicing, ensure personal protective equipment is worn, including safety glasses and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area when using solvents . Never look directly into the fiber ends, as laser light can cause serious retinal damage . Verify the cable's bend radius, tension, and installation limits according to the manufacturer's specifications . For composite cables like Figure 8, identify the fiber subunit (printed side) and the messenger subunit (strength member). Use a web-slitting tool such as the Benner-Nawman UP-B36 to carefully separate the fiber subunit from the messenger without damaging the fibers . Mark the cable to determine the length of fiber needed for the splice closure or termination box, leaving enough slack for routing.Fiber PreparationStrip the outer jacket of the fiber subunit using specialized stripping tools to expose the bare glass fibers .Clean the fibers with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove any dust or residue .Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver to make a clean, perpendicular cut on each fiber end. Proper cleaving is critical for low-loss splicing .Splicing MethodsFusion SplicingPlace the prepared fiber ends into a fusion splicer. The splicer aligns the fiber cores and uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers into a single continuous strand .Fusion splicing provides the lowest signal loss (typically
