An optical cable, or fiber optic cable, is a cable that transmits data using light signals through a glass or plastic core, offering high-speed, long-distance, and interference-resistant communication.Structure of an Optical CableAn optical cable consists of several layers designed to protect the delicate fiber while ensuring efficient light transmission. At the center is the core, made of ultra-pure glass or plastic, where light signals travel. Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly different refractive index to keep light trapped inside the core through total internal reflection. Around the cladding are protective layers, including a buffer coating to cushion the fiber and an outer jacket to shield against moisture, abrasion, and mechanical stress. Some cables include additional armor, such as steel or Kevlar, for outdoor or undersea applications .How Optical Cables WorkOptical cables transmit data by sending pulses of light through the fiber core. A transmitter converts electrical signals into light pulses, which travel along the fiber and are reflected internally by the cladding. At the receiving end, a photodetector converts the light back into electrical signals.
