Mongolia s Fiber Optic Sensor Development Plan

Mongolia is expanding its fiber optic network and data infrastructure nationwide, with a focus on the Gobi region, remote areas, and integration with green energy and digital economy initiatives.National Fiber Optic ExpansionMongolia has been actively developing its broadband and fiber optic infrastructure to improve connectivity across its vast territory. The Program on High-Speed Broadband Network, approved by decree No. 145 in 2011, has led to a significant increase in fiber optic deployment, particularly in provincial centers, supporting services such as internet, TV, phone, and Wi-Fi for households and businesses . The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Communications (MDDIC) plans to expand network coverage in 74 bags this year and 55 bags next year, targeting remote and underserved areas . Cellular networks currently cover only 23.8% of Mongolia's habitable land, highlighting the need for continued fiber and satellite-based solutions .Gobi Region DevelopmentThe government has announced plans to transform the Gobi region into a hub for specialized industries and green energy. This includes constructing a data center in Umnugobi aimag and introducing fiber optic connectivity to 13 key locations . The initiative aims to integrate energy, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure, leveraging Mongolia's abundant energy resources, favorable climate, strategic location, and low natural disaster risk . The national strategy for data center development, covering 2025–2030, will guide investment, legal frameworks, cybersecurity standards, and renewable energy integration .Technological and Strategic InitiativesMongolia is implementing GPON networks using OLT and ONU equipment in selected provinces to extend fiber optic connectivity to edge areas . Public-private partnerships are emphasized, alongside regional cable infrastructure development and incentives for foreign investment in data centers . The government is also preparing to launch a national satellite in 2027 to complement terrestrial fiber networks and provide communication services to remote regions . The Universal Service Obligation Fund supports these efforts by financing network expansion and service delivery in underserved areas .Key PrioritiesLegal and regulatory updates to create a stable, investment-friendly environment Robust cybersecurity and data protection standards Renewable energy-based infrastructure with green financing and tax incentives Expansion of fiber optic networks to provincial centers, remote areas, and industrial hubs Integration with satellite communications to ensure nationwide coverage Mongolia's fiber optic and data infrastructure development plan is a comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting digital connectivity, supporting industrial and green energy growth, and positioning the country as a competitive player in the international data center market.
